I am installing a wired smoke alarm in the basement for some bedroom developement. Can i use regular white 2 wire lumex to the first alarm and regular white 3 wire lumex to the second using the 3rd (Red) wire to tie the smoke alarm activation together (so when one goes off they both do)?

You are on the correct track. The only comments I will add is that the circuit supplying power to the smoke detectors has to be a lighting branch circuit. Also if there are other detectors upstairs then they all need to be tied together. If one alarms they all sound off.
Happy wiring and don't forget the electrical permit.
